If students are supported by a bursary from the NHS, they may be entitled to claim certain travel and accommodation expenses incurred during practice placement only. This reimbursement is made by the NHS Student Grants Unit. If during the course of duties on placement additional travel expenses are incurred, for example completing a home visit, students should have this certified by the practice educator.
For students not receiving a bursary, the student is responsible for all costs incurred from travelling to and from the practice placement and between placement sites. Students are advised that the University will meet no such costs.
Very occasionally the authority in which the practice placement takes place or the student’s workplace will agree to pay travel expenses incurred whilst visiting clients on placement. Students will otherwise be responsible for travel costs. (Agreement for this must be made before the placement is undertaken) Practice educators are asked to clarify the student’s entitlement to claim travel expenses before asking them to undertake journeys in connection with departmental business.
Practice educators are also asked to clarify cover for insurance if asking a student to use his/her own car in the course of departmental business. Students who elect to use their own car for the official business of the placement must ensure that they are properly insured, normally through comprehensive insurance which specifically identifies cover for use on business. Where there is any doubt the student must contact the insurance company and have agreement in writing for any additional cover required. Students may be asked to produce evidence of insurance cover for their practice educator.
